Safety is at the core of indoor amusement park design. Many accidents are not caused by major equipment failures, but rather by overlooked minor details. Drawing on industry experience and real-world case studies, Playpedia Amusement has compiled a list of safety details that are easily overlooked in the design process, helping to mitigate risks at the source and ensure children's safety while playing.
Ⅰ. Gaps and Holes: Pinch and Suffocation Hazards Hidden in the Details
Most designs focus on the overall structure of the indoor playground equipment but overlook the control of gap and hole dimensions. National standards explicitly require that facility gaps be ≤8mm or ≥25mm to prevent children's fingers, hands, or feet from getting trapped. However, dangerous gaps of 1–3 cm often appear at slide joints, the edges of ball pits, holes in climbing nets and ropes, and the seams of soft padding due to installation errors or long-term use, making it extremely easy for fingers to get pinched.
Additionally, the openwork designs of climbing frames and fences often overlook the required safety clearance for head circumference. If the diameter of openings falls between 8–18 cm, children's heads can easily become trapped, posing a risk of suffocation. Many decorative openwork features in trendy designs also become safety hazards because they prioritize aesthetics over safety, failing to include anti-entrapment measures.
Ⅱ. Impact Protection: More Than Just Soft Padding-Thickness and Seam Integration Are Key

Floor cushioning is a fundamental safety measure, but it's easy to fall into the misconception that "laying down soft mats ensures safety." On one hand, many mats fail to meet thickness standards: EPDM mats in children's activity areas must be ≥3 cm thick, while those in high-fall zones (such as beneath climbing frames) must be ≥5 cm thick. To cut costs, many facilities use thinner mats, which cannot effectively absorb the impact of a fall from a height.
On the other hand, gaps at the seams also pose hidden dangers. If the gaps between the indoor playground mats and the equipment or walls are not sealed, or if the edges are curled up or the seams are uneven, children are likely to trip while running. In addition, if the slope where the slide meets the mat is too steep, the impact force during sliding will be concentrated, which can easily lead to ankle sprains in children.
Cushioning details in ball pits are even more prone to being overlooked. The depth of a ball pit should not exceed 30 cm; if it is too deep, a toddler who falls may become buried and unable to get up to call for help. Additionally, if the bottom of the ball pit is not lined with non-slip cushioning mats, the surface becomes slippery over time, making it easy for children to fall and bump into things while chasing each other.
Ⅲ. Electrical and Fire Safety: Hidden Risks in Concealed Work
Indoor playgrounds feature numerous electrical devices and complex building materials, making it easy to overlook hidden electrical and fire safety details.
Regarding electrical systems, all wiring must be concealed within conduits. Outlets must be installed at a height of 1.6 meters or higher-out of children's reach-and feature IP64-rated waterproof and dustproof design, equipped with ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs). However, in many designs, to facilitate maintenance, wiring is left exposed on the exterior of equipment, and outlet heights are insufficient, which can easily lead to electrical leakage accidents in humid environments.
Fire safety details are even more prone to oversights. Decorative materials, soft furnishings, and ball pits must meet Class B1 flame-retardant standards, and plastic components must pass the UL94 V-0 flame-retardant test. In practice, ordinary flammable materials are often used, and insufficient evacuation routes are provided. There are no reflective signs at the corners of the hallways, and the emergency lighting is inadequate; in the event of a fire, this could easily lead to panic and crowding among the children in the indoor soft playground .
Ⅳ. Edges and Impact Protection: Upholstery Is Not a Panacea; Curvature and Height Matter

Many people believe that "covering all edges with upholstery is sufficient," yet they overlook the quality of the upholstery, its curvature, and the required impact protection height. Padding must be made of high-density, flame-retardant material with a thickness of ≥5 cm to prevent the hard substrate from being exposed if the thin padding tears.
Equipment edges must be rounded with a radius of ≥3 cm; even if sharp right angles are covered with padding, repeated impacts over time can cause the padding to dent, still resulting in injuries.
The required height of impact protection is often underestimated. Kids come in many different heights. For this reason, anti-collision strips need to cover heights from 0.6 meters to 1.2 meters. This includes walls, support columns and equipment frames. Many venues only add protective padding on lower surfaces. The upper corners of columns above 1 meter are often left unprotected. Taller kids may easily get hurt while running or jumping.
Ⅴ. Zoning and Visibility: Hidden Safety Risks in Space Layout

Reasonable zoning effectively reduces collisions. However, many kid indoor play parks prioritize space usage over safety. They ignore age grouping and open visibility. Toddler zones for children aged 0 to 3 are often not separated from play areas for kids aged 4 to 12. Older kids tend to run and chase, which can easily knock down young toddlers. Besides, fences for toddler zones are usually lower than 1.1 meters. Without proper barriers, small children may climb over and get lost.
Visibility blind spots are another critical hazard. Many venues use partitions and decorative walls to divide spaces. These obstructions stop staff from keeping an eye on every corner. When kids misbehave or climb dangerous spots in blind areas, workers cannot respond in time. Designers should keep the space open and visible with fewer barriers. It is also necessary to install cameras to cover every blind spot.
Safety always comes down to tiny details. When designing indoor playground protection systems, complying with official standards is not enough. Operators need to focus on easily missed details - gap width, mat thickness, electric and fire safety, edge wrapping and space planning. Only by checking every detail carefully can we build a genuinely safe playground for children.
